The Instinctive Spiritual Life – Grace is the End of all Religious Striving

Spiritual

What if everything you’ve been taught about living the Christian life was making it harder, not easier?

A question that is instinctive to Bill Rose —his story, now one of  breaking free from religious striving and has been tremendously liberating. For years he was caught up on the trap of modern evangelicalism and carried the weight of performance, expectations, and the relentless drive to prove himself. A pastor in a high-profile church, he poured all his energy into a performance based life, demonstrating his spiritual worth—growing his ministry, impressing leadership, and keeping up appearances. His entire livelihood depended on it. But behind the scenes, exhaustion crept in. The very faith he had committed his life to was beginning to feel like an impossible burden.

The Breaking Point

And then it all came to a head and breaking point. Exhaustion and feeling “not enough” brought me to the end of myself.

“I got honest with God and said, ‘I want to know how to live the Spiritual Life.’ And I needed to know the truth of it or I was leaving Christianity behind.”

That raw confession God heard because it became the end of one tiresome road and the new beginning of a radical shift—one that would lead to an entirely different way of living the spiritual life in Christ.  A way of life not marked by striving, but by rest. Not by fear of failure or punishment and torment, but by true grace.

The Burden That Was Never Yours to Carry

The turning point came through an unlikely source: Matthew 11:28-30— which is Jesus’ invitation to those weary from carrying heavy spiritual loads. He tells us:

“For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”

It was like the words lit up. These words weren’t just comforting; they were revolutionary to my journey. If Jesus said His way was easy and light, why was modern Christianity so exhausting? Why did faith feel like a never-ending list of requirements?

That question led to a discovery that would upend everything: The spiritual life in Christ wasn’t something to be earned, built, or maintained—it was something to be received, entered into, and enjoyed.

“Stop trying to live the spiritual life and enjoy it,” Bill now says. “It is wonderful and fulfilling. Enter the rest of the finished work of Christ.” (Hebrews 4:9-11)

From Effort to Instinct: A New Way to Live

This revelation didn’t just change Bill’s personal faith—it became the foundation for something bigger. So much so that he is now writing The Instinctive Spiritual Life, a book that captures the essence of what he has learned. The premise? That when we fully embrace grace, we no longer struggle to live the Christian life—it begins to live itself in us, instinctually. After all, we are in Christ and He is in us.

This message isn’t just about theological clarity; it’s about freedom. About stepping away from the endless cycle of trying harder, measuring up, and keeping spiritual score.

“Grace is the only way to live within the spiritual life,” Bill explains. “Any works-oriented effort looks pathetic and dismal.”

And once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

Grace That’s Already Yours

Bill’s encounters with others are no longer about convincing them to strive for something they don’t have. It is no longer fear-based and doing focused. Instead, he simply affirms with others a reality that is already true:

“I’m grace-driven 24/7 into every person I come in contact with. They are universally saved and seated in the heavenly places, and my contact with them is to verify that to them—whether acknowledged or not.”

In other words, grace isn’t something we achieve or earn. It’s something Jesus did and we get to wake up to.

Sharing the Message of Grace with the World

Bill doesn’t keep this message to himself—he shares it with others as a co-host of Conversations in Christ, a show featured on Gan TV – Grace Awakening Network, as well as on podcast platforms and YouTube. Through engaging discussions with his co-hosts, who bring a grace-centered and Trinitarian perspective, Bill invites listeners to explore the depths of grace and the freedom found in Christ.

For those eager to dive deeper, his website, ConversationsinChrist.net, offers valuable resources, discussions, and insights on the transformative power of grace.

With his upcoming book, The Instinctive Spiritual Life, Bill hopes to reach even more people, helping them experience the freedom he has found—showing that the Christian life was never meant to be a burden, but a joy.

The striving is over. The burden is lifted. He longs for everyone to understand this—to stop trying to live the spiritual life and simply enjoy it. It is meant to be wonderful, fulfilling, and freeing. Enter the rest of Christ’s finished work.
